Inspiration: If love is war, then past love affairs deserve to be honored as such. Inspired by Viking funerals, specifically the well known trope of cremation in a ship. The smoke pillars were made as high as possible to elevate to the afterlife, sending the honored dead to Valhalla. I wanted to merge that symbolism with that of the message in a bottle carried away by the ocean currents to unknown shores, rich with the idea of romance, disaster, history and hope. Each bottle contains a relic from past relationships, a visual following on from an earlier work featuring two lovers entwined inside a flying Molotov cocktail. Where that one expressed passion and impending destruction, this piece is about honoring past romance and letting go.
Painted on 100% cotton duck, high density weave, acid free 380gr double thick canvas stretched on a 38mm deep frame, offering a contemporary clean edge look with no further framing required. Faux gold foil on canvas edges creates a subtle glow effect when the painting is hung flat against a wall. D-hooks and hanging rope are installed on the back of the canvas for easy hanging. Signed with artists initials and year of creation on front. Sealed with archival quality varnish, allowing light cleaning with a damp cloth if needed.
