medium: polymer clay sculpture
size: 5cm x 5cm x 17.5cm / 2" x 2" x 7"
created in: 2015
Exhibited as a feature piece in Waterborne, a month long solo show at Just Another Project Space in Prahran, Melbourne, Australia.
Using saturated retro-reminiscent colours, I aimed for a kitsch vibe at odds with the form - a reaching tentacle, embedded with human teeth. The tip of the tentacle is arched forward, as though searching for something. The undulating shape, along with the pinkness of the interior cutaway, brings to mind a tongue. This piece was inspired by fear of the unknown, that sense of unease you might feel when swimming over an ocean trench.
Oven baked polymer clay over a light-weight metallic core. Signed with artists initials and year of creation engraved in base. Sealed with archival quality varnish, allowing light cleaning with a damp cloth if needed.
